This Week's Hi-5:
Come for one, stay for any or all
Alex Hillman
This was one of those weeks where you could really feel the things happening, especially as Philly finally thaws out and folks are happily emerging from their homes.
Here’s 5 quick things that made us want to share a high five:
1. A Shared Living Room Vibe on Wednesday Nights
This was a moment that I’ve been looking forward to for a while!
Our vision for Wednesday nights at the Indy Hall Clubhouse is that they start to feel like a big shared living room, with multiple different but complementary community activities happening at the same time.
The sort of thing where you can come for one but stay for any or all.
This past Wednesday night brought together the trifecta of our recurring Civic Tech Coworking Night, added in the reboot of Indy Hall Game Night, AND introduced our first collaboration with PHL Code Club for a Rust CLI workshop — all happening at the same time under one roof.
The room was buzzing with energy and we’re excited for more nights like this one ahead!

2. Member Wins & Milestones
Three rapid-fire wins to share this week:
-
Cannon was named one of ten speakers at Blue Ridge Ruby this spring — congrats!
-
Meanwhile, Jessica accidentally rented Verónica on Netflix in Spanish and discovered she understood 95% of it without Google Translate. “Having context and Spanish subtitles were fundamental to my success, but still a win by me.”
-
And Stuart is finally back in action after a rough recent surgery and recovery. Welcome back, Stuart!
3. Good Neighbors Hackathon: Tickets Are Live
Registration is officially open for Good Neighbors, our hackathon for Philly, by Philly. Tickets are just $10 (includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks), plus scholarship spots are available for anyone who needs one.
We’re also excited to welcome Resilient Coders as a contributing sponsor. RC trains resilient people from underrepresented communities as software engineers, and their commitment to teaching fundamentals before shortcuts aligns perfectly with how we think about this stuff. More on this partnership soon.
4. First Batch of Indy Hall Merch has arrived
You might’ve seen me sporting a JFDI beanie myself the last few weeks.
This is another one that’s been in the works for a VERY long time - our first batch of Indy Hall merch has been ordered!
Pretty soon, we’ll have more (and more colors) you can pick up one of your own online and in person very soon!
The initial lineup includes very special mugs designed by Myr Bloom, and JFDI beanies available in a number of colors.
5. Keeping Our WiFi Fast
Our internet is VERY fast thanks to Philly Wisper, but we work extra hard to keep our own wifi network fast and reliable.
We’re adding more access points and making a few other tweaks to keep our connection in tip top shape, especially on our busiest days.
Once the upgrade is complete, everything should be better automatically!
